  • Galina Stefanova – Art Psychotherapist

    Creativity is an important element in the well-being of the human being.

    In art therapy, creativity stimulates problem solving, looking out of the box and building up self esteem. It makes sense of past traumatic experiences, bringing comfort in situations of loss and bereavement. Art materials have sensory qualities, which absorb anxious or angry feelings and help the client to regulate their emotions in a safe way. These qualities are of good use for clients with challenging behaviour.

    I am an Art Psychotherapist with over 20 year's experience of working with children and adults with autism, ADHD, moderate and profound and multiple learning difficulties, and comorbidity.

    For the last 10 years I have also worked with people, who experienced childhood trauma or abuse, anxiety, challenging behaviour, loss and bereavement, low self esteem and difficulties with transitional situations in life.

    I draw on the strength of my client, who is at the heart of my work. The combination of approaches I use is non directive and holistic. In my work, I call on psycho-dynamic and person-centered theory. I accompany my client's journey in art therapy with gentle guidance, offering a safe and trusting environment.

    I employ a range of other approaches and tools:
    - intensive interaction, www.intensiveinteraction.co.uk;
    - picture exchange communication system;
    - Makaton sign language;
    - Children's Accelerated Trauma Treatment;
    - Parent-child art therapy;
    - Well-being groups with parents.

    You do not have to be an artist to be in art therapy. There is no right or wrong way of using the art materials. However, if you wonder whether art therapy is for you, please contact me, and we can discuss further possibilities.

    If you can't find a way, create one!
